How to teach and coach two-man basketball plays

All two-man basketball plays should fit into the overall plan of attack and I mean both basketball offense and defense. This incremental teaching goal, even with six-year olds, can be easily achieved.

Incremental teaching the use of screens

How we teach is an important basketball fundamentals is important. Incremental, or progressive, teaching is easily adapted to athletics. Here are the steps:

  1. Explain the drill.
  2. Walk through the drill, paying attention to form without competition or speed.
  3. Drill for speed and form.
  4. Drill for speed and form adding a single defender.
  5. Drill for speed and form adding the second defender.
  6. Drill for speed and form using two defenders with concentration on reading the defense. Stress doing what the defense lets you do.
  7. Drill and smooth-out the rough spots and elevate the skill level.
Two-Man Play - Pass, Roll and Return Pass, Roll off Screen and Return to Screener.

Player 2 executes the two-step rule, faking a cut toward the basket and cutting back outside, taking a pass from player 1. Player 1, after taking a step to his left and moves toward player 2 as if to set a screen, but drops behind 2 for the return pass and instead of shooting over the screen by player 2, he dribble drives. At the same time, player 2 rolls off the screen he set for 1 and takes a return pass from 1 for a lay-up. Player 1 rebounds the ball.

Two-Man Play - Pass, Drive and Shoot Pass, Screen, Drive and Shoot.

Player 1, after taking a step to his left and moves toward player 2 and seta a screen for 2. Player 1, using the screen, dribble-drives to the basket for a lay-up. Player 1 rebounds the ball.

Two-Man Play - Pass and Return to Screener Pass, Screen and Return to Screener.

Player 2 executes the two-step rule, faking a cut toward the basket and cutting back outside, taking a pass from player 1. Player 1, after taking a step to his left and moves toward player 2 and sets a screen on 2's defender. Player 2 dribble-drives toward the basket as player 1 rolls off his screen and looks for a return pass from 2. Player 2 rebounds the ball.

Two-Man Play - Fake Pass and Cut Backdoor Fake Pass and Cut Backdoor.

In the course of a game, player 2 often finds his defender overplaying him in eagerness to intercept 1's pass. Player executes the two-step rule, faking toward the ball. Player 1 fakes a pass which signals 2 to cut to the basket. This pass fake is important as it helps freeze 2's defender which is vital to the success of this play. Player 1 follows his pass to rebound the ball.
