Youngsters are often blessed with a
feel and touch on the green; however, without reasonable basic
instruction they will still struggle with their putting game. Putting
is the most personal part of the game. There are hundreds of different
styles and it is impossible to pick out any one style which can be
called the best. We can, however, pick out certain individuals who are
terrific putters - Tiger Woods, Phil Mickleson, Ben Crenshaw, etc - so
what do these guys have in common?
- feel
- confidence
- imagination
- sound basic fundamentals
You may notice that the majority of the
qualities necessary for good putting are in the mind. If you believe
you can, you will.
Sound basic technique includes
(see Figures 1, 2, & 3)
- the grip varies; however, the pressure
should be soft and comfortable.
- make sure the putter is not too long. Adjust
to fit the child.
- let the arms hang freely from the shoulders.
- position the eyes directly over the ball
(see Figure 4)
- position the ball in the forward half of the
stance
- feel the strike in the shoulders.Never
move the head until you hear the ball drop into the hole
